|Yes, it is possible to counterfeit results, although often it'll be obvious from the distribution when one is a fake.|
When I extract the final best design from the distributed computing run, I simulate it several times over myself to get a more accurate muon percentage, and of course, to check whether the design specified in the file really _does_ produce a good design for the accelerator.
