Subject: Alternative vote - summary
They had a section on the Alternative Vote system on the Daily Politics
programme. It turns out the situation is somewhat complicated. As I see it
there are plus and minus points:
+ It gives voters more options so they can express their opinions more
accurately
+ Voters who choose minority parties as a first choice aren't "wasting a
vote" as their 2nd choice is often used
- In simulations of the last two(?) elections it benefitted Labour and it's
being announced right before the general election, which looks suspicious
- In those simulations the result actually moved _further_ away from the
Proportional Representation result, in general
and finally
+ Having to write numbers in the boxes raises the minimum IQ required to
vote
