Early studies (study 1 and 2) for the neutrino factory were done in the late 1990s in various places include FermiLab.  I've found the following concept drawing of the possible structure layout around the target and decay channel that we're simulatiing:

The cylinder going off to the right is the decay channel and houses the solenoids.  A lot of the concrete around the place is simply radiation shielding.  The crane at the top is needed to move the heavier components into place (the ISIS accelerator here has a crane built into it too).

It doesn't make any sense: that's why they call it "virtual"
