Could the simulation not just stop after the muon transfer will be less than say 10%?  As far as I can tell, the number of surviving muons decreases over the course of a simulation, so why not just stop when its below a threshold and start the next simulation?

Unless I'm missing something, this would make the algorithm WAAAAAAAAAY more efficient.

I don't only want to simulate the highest results because otherwise the program wouldn't know anything about any other possibilities.  Basically, you can't learn without making mistakes (and then recording them in a results.dat file).  It's also useful for me scientifically to see how the yield falls off in various ways.  Also the worst designs are simulated more quickly due to the lower number of particles.

It doesn't make any sense: that's why they call it "virtual"
