Stephen Brooks 2002-08-09 02:48:51 | I've now uploaded a version of v4.21 that identifies it as a separate version "v4.21a" so that I can distinguish it from the old one that had bugs. Sorry for all these bug versions but if this one doesn't work properly something very odd must be happening. "As every 11-year-old kid knows, if you concentrate enough Van-der-Graff generators and expensive special effects in one place, you create a spiral space-time whirly thing, AND an interesting plotline" |
Pascal 2002-08-09 03:07:14 | Ok, I'll try it. But if it does not work properly ___________________________ 1: Athlon TB-C, 1.2 GC/s, 256 MB DDR-RAM, Erazor x², ADSL-Flatrate, NIC Intel, Win 98 SE Mainboard MSI-6380 Rev. 1 2: Pentium III, 600 MC/s, 256 MB RAM, NIC Intel, Win 98 SE |
Helix_Von_Smelix 2002-08-09 03:14:42 | Been running okay for about an hour, so far so good. Also looks to be working with two threads ( at last !! ) If you make instant coffee in to a microwave do you go back in time?? |
Pascal 2002-08-09 03:22:14 | @Stephen: Could you mark the download link with the right version and the actual date? (time is not necessary) ___________________________ 1: Athlon TB-C, 1.2 GC/s, 256 MB DDR-RAM, Erazor x², ADSL-Flatrate, NIC Intel, Win 98 SE Mainboard MSI-6380 Rev. 1 2: Pentium III, 600 MC/s, 256 MB RAM, NIC Intel, Win 98 SE |
Stephen Brooks 2002-08-09 07:17:44 | I've checked on the FTP server and at last this v4.21 (called v4.21a in the files) seems to be behaving properly. Just as well because I sent out the server signal to all the clients to ask their users to upgrade! The download link on the web always pointed to the most recent version. When I found a bug I deleted it from the server so it was a dead link for a few hours, but at least nobody could download a faulty client. When I go back home this evening I will add this version to the stats database and your new results will show up. "As every 11-year-old kid knows, if you concentrate enough Van-der-Graff generators and expensive special effects in one place, you create a spiral space-time whirly thing, AND an interesting plotline" |
Pascal 2002-08-09 07:44:43 | I'm a board moderator at www.rechenkraft.net and want to tell the people something about that project. I feel a bit responsible for bringing along so many people from www.rechenkraft.net The problem is, that people get confused about downloading v4.21a on a link that shows V4.21. ___________________________ 1: Athlon TB-C, 1.2 GC/s, 256 MB DDR-RAM, Erazor x², ADSL-Flatrate, NIC Intel, Win 98 SE Mainboard MSI-6380 Rev. 1 2: Pentium III, 600 MC/s, 256 MB RAM, NIC Intel, Win 98 SE |
gogomaus 2002-08-09 08:02:05 | Hi Stephen, though only responsible for myself; I find it also somewhat confusing what´s going on with your version types. Couldn´t you simply put on your website this newest edition as v4.22 so that everyone could detect it as a new one ??? |
Stephen Brooks 2002-08-09 08:04:59 | I shall change it to 4.21a when I get back home where the master files for the website are. If I just changed the HTML from here it would get overwritten with the stats update. "As every 11-year-old kid knows, if you concentrate enough Van-der-Graff generators and expensive special effects in one place, you create a spiral space-time whirly thing, AND an interesting plotline" |
pben 2002-08-09 15:17:53 | You might stick something in the ReadMe about config.txt. I only found it after reading here that others got threads to work! |
Skygod 2002-08-09 15:53:55 | It appears that v4.21a is still trying to send results.txt even though the computer is offline. Found my results.txt renamed to the send format sitting in my muon folder. Also still seem to be getting a lot of zero results. |
thormodr 2002-08-09 18:51:35 | Just to be clear... Are results from v4.21 thrown out? I upgraded to v4.21a midway through my simulation so my results.txt file is a mix of v4.21 and v4.21a runs... Should I erase that v4.21 results from the file? Also [insert generic whine about missing stats], my first results.txt whilst using v4.21 that got sent a day and a half ago (81 runs, max 0.209%, username:thormodr) seems to have dissapeared into the ether... Alas.... thromodr |
pben 2002-08-09 20:00:53 | I also have three results files of 101k in the muon1v42 directory. They also seem to be very close to zero. I am also on dialup so I wasn't connected when the three attempts were made. The history chart in the viewer is a great idea. My averages have fallen to the floor though |
Stephen Brooks 2002-08-10 09:44:41 | quote: Results uploaded from a v4.21 client will be thrown out, but the results if mixed with a v4.21a file are OK themselves. I think the v4.21 uploader had problems and inserted blank lines. Just make sure you are RUNNING v4.21a not the older one and it should work OK. "As every 11-year-old kid knows, if you concentrate enough Van-der-Graff generators and expensive special effects in one place, you create a spiral space-time whirly thing, AND an interesting plotline" |
Stephen Brooks 2002-08-10 09:52:26 | quote: What does it say in your config.txt file? I tested sending of results, and it did not attempt to send with the "auto-send" set to "No" or "N" or whatever. On Monday I'll do some more testing of the new results-file-parsing code in case there is something wrong with it and it is not reading results from results.dat correctly. "As every 11-year-old kid knows, if you concentrate enough Van-der-Graff generators and expensive special effects in one place, you create a spiral space-time whirly thing, AND an interesting plotline" |
pben 2002-08-10 17:37:12 | Here is my config.txt Resolution: 1024x768 Priority for background running ([N]ormal, [L]ow, [B]ackground): L Threads: 2 Auto-send results ([Y]es, [N]o): Y Auto-save interval (seconds; 0 for no save): 180 I am playing in Linux this weekend so I haven't had it up since I last posted. I did send them in with manualsend.exe. After sending in one I renamed the next results.txt and reran the porgram. Does 4.21a not use the results.dat from 4.21? The results are so low. |
Stephen Brooks 2002-08-10 18:59:10 | OK so I now have an agenda for v4.21b: 1. Make sure that if sending is unsuccessful, the file is renamed back to results.txt again and not left as an unsent file with a uniqueid name. 2. Test reading of results from a .dat file. I was going to postpone this until Monday but might actually do this tomorrow seeing as it is a fairly important bugfix. "As every 11-year-old kid knows, if you concentrate enough Van-der-Graff generators and expensive special effects in one place, you create a spiral space-time whirly thing, AND an interesting plotline" |
Jwb52z 2002-08-10 21:12:11 | I'm glad you said those things Stephen because I get the feeling that it is not reading the results correctly because having over 100 results to choose from to combine for future simulations should not have almost every result nearly zero. That does not make sense. |
Jutral 2002-08-11 01:02:41 | Aye. I'm also having nearly all of my results in the 'very, very, very low' end of the spectrum *(Might as well further support an apparent bug.)* |
Helix_Von_Smelix 2002-08-11 02:49:40 | I think i will await version 5. Seeya later peeps. off to look at ud.com & maybe prime95 If you make instant coffee in to a microwave do you go back in time?? |
gogomaus 2002-08-11 03:02:36 | quote: Stephen, Version v4.21a is "quick and dirty" (sorry, just a joke) I think I found one bug, making versions 4.2x incompatible ! Under v4.2 your parameter rowing was : zsrc; rotsrc; s1f; s1l; d1l;... But version4.21a shows in result.txt : zsrc; rotsrc; s1l; s1f; d1l;... Found it while comparing parameter values of my last 70 runs, I had manually implemented one good result from v4.2. (took it off before sending of course). Lokks like v4.21a results are pointless for our project, but I hope you will have a good chance to get it corrected now. For the moment I will go back to version 4.2. Kind regards, Wolfgang |
Stephen Brooks 2002-08-11 06:03:01 | --[Under v4.2 your parameter rowing was : zsrc; rotsrc; s1f; s1l; d1l;... But version4.21a shows in result.txt : zsrc; rotsrc; s1l; s1f; d1l;...]-- That doesn't matter: the way it is stored internally means it uses the field names to index the values, so they could actually be stored in any order and it would still be OK.
