If the client is crashing pretty quickly after restarting and you have an auto.sav file, I suggest you rename auto.sav to auto.sav.keep (or anything you please) and try restarting the client.

The auto.sav file contains information that allows your simulation to resume after a stop without losing all your work.  A bug could cause it to contain bad data.  If you rename it, then the client will run without the bad data.

The reason to rename auto.sav instead of deleting it is so that you can send it to Stephen in case he thinks it might help him debug the underlying problem.

Only send him the file if he asks for it!  It is probably around 1.5 Meg and Stephen might not like getting such large emails.  If this suggestion fixes your problem and no one else reports a similar problem, then don't be surprised if Stephen doesn't spend time on this issue.

Another possibility is that your results.dat could be corrupted (even extra blank lines might cause problems).  If this is your problem, you can get the latest best250 file.

Why is your client renamed to "Muon1_background2"?  big grin

well thats easy.  I have two folders, muon and muon2. and i have two clients running muon_backround and muon_background2 so i know which is which in the taskmanager.  So easy is it.  big grin big grin

OK as long as they're in separate folders that should work - but _why_ are you doing this?  SMP support is already present, so it can only be e.g. trying to run it in a network share, which is not something I can verify to be workable.

its defenitly not a network folder.  non of the Muon folders is.
Im doing that cause i experiment with some different parents genomes.  and with two folders ha ve not to change the results.dat as often.

P.s. i renamed the auto.sav and it seems to work now again without problems.

I also had troubles...

Received a brandnew laptop from work... Dell, running XP.
I was very curious how it would perform its new task; crunching MUON's wink
It didn't mad dr.Watson visited me every time i tried to start the MuonCMD via MuonMonitor.
Funny thing is that this also occured at my (last week newly installed) NT4 Sp4 box at work (so i suppose it has nothing to do with the OS version or type).
Since there is no auto.sav file in the CMD version i tried with renaming the results.dat (also advised in this thread) and renaming the autosave.c file (just a hunch roll eyes).  Neither solutions worked for me.

Then i had the idea of downloading the Muon1 (BG version) again and try that version... and EUREKA; it works again smile (life can be so simple sometimes big grin )
Another 1.8 Ghz'r crunching smile

Thought i share this info... maybe it is of some value to others...
(will try this trick on my NT box at work next tuesday)

Strangely, my Background does an occasional crash on my computer as well, but stopped mysteriously, with no reason I can catch at all.

Try going to windowsupdate.microsoft.com and patch up your computer with all the updates.

BTW, does the CMD work on WinXP at all?  It might not work with just the DOS emulator.

I have the problem if the client is saving while the PC is rebooting or turning off... the auto.sav file is malformed and the next time I start up muon crashes.

Malformed, eh?

Well FWIW I've fixed this in the development source by making it save to "autocli.sav.tmp" and then when saving is complete, moving that file over the top of "autocli.sav". In UNIX the rename operation is atomic; don't know about Windows, but at least the period in which there is half-a-file should be significantly less this way.
